According to external sources, around 10 million people worldwide are stateless.
Officially, Côte d‘Ivoire has the highest number of stateless people in the world.
This is the result of immigration of workers from neighboring countries such as Burkina Faso and Mali as well as refugees from the Sahel who are fleeing climate change and terrorism. Many of them do not have valid documents.
However, immigration is not the only reason why many in
Côte d‘Ivoire are stateless. The Ivorian registration system is difficult to
access in many parts of the country. Many Ivorians do not register births of their children.
The country is trying to find solutions and has introduced programs to
to support stateless people.
