"interthread" is a lens-based collection of portraiture and evolving body of work that spans several years, exploring belonging, love, and kinship within Brown diasporic communities. The images, both staged and candid, preserve the love stories of various sitters— romantic couples, familial bonds, and close friendships— documenting tender moments of intimacy across generations, genders, and national origin.
“interthread” celebrates Brownness amidst widespread societal narratives of subjugation and fear mongering; highlighting the layered relations that form in Brown communities spread throughout the world by choice or by force.
At the heart of "interthread" are vibrant, hand-painted canvases that reimagine the photographic backdrop, commonly associated with traditional portrait photography. These nomadic sanctuaries act as constructed safe spaces for love and liberation. envisioning new ways of forming community and connection; and reconciling with what is lost in migration.
