[full] "What Have You Done To The Earth?"
In darkness, I wander woods using lights to accent liminal illusions from pareidolia:
Here, resultant “abstract beings” portray my feeling that our disrespect of nature – and even each other – can be “life out of balance” (from the Hopi word “Koyaanisqatsi” of the eponymous film): I envision Nature rising against us in disgust.
My title came from a song stanza in “When the Music’s Over” by a 60’s rock-poet, Jim Morrison of The Doors:
What have they done to the Earth? /
What have they done to our fair sister? /
Ravaged and plundered and ripped her and bit her/
Stuck her with knives in the side of the dawn /
Tied her with fences and dragged her down!
He believed a Native American’s soul possessed him with rage. Read works by activist/historian Dunbar-Ortiz and others to see why (eg, brutal settler colonialism, genocidal acts, greed – or even good intentions gone wrong.) Life out of balance!
[NOTE: For my pareidolic illusions, I do not composite or digitally draw features onto the subject that weren’t there. Instead, I use selective light-painting during exposure, and may alter tone and color in post.] Best viewed with dark background!
